About Supercharger Kits
Supercharger kits are a great way to increase the
performance of your car’s horsepower and torque without having to do a full
turbocharger conversion. These kits are sold with everything needed to make a
fully functional supercharged system in your vehicle.
You might be wondering if adding a supercharger to your
car will really provide an increase in performance, or whether it is worth the
money. Let’s take a look at what supercharger kits can do for your ride, and
what to expect regarding performance after installation.
A supercharger is a forced induction system for your
engine, sometimes referred to as a blower. More simply put, it is an air pump
driven by the crankshaft which allows for a greater volume of air and fuel
being brought into the combustion chamber to provide boost. There are two types
available: a centrifugal, or forced induction, kit which acts similar to a
turbocharger, and a positive displacement supercharger. Which you choose will
depend on your vehicle and what you hope to realize with installation of one of
these kits.
A centrifugal supercharger kit is generally used in
smaller vehicles which have less space in the engine compartment. It works as a
compressor with an impeller wheel which is driven by step-up gears to move
maximum air into the engine. This process does not work until higher rpms are
achieved, so it will take a few seconds, after reaching 2,000 rpms, to
experience boost. However, the step-up gearing means you can still create
maximum displacement in a smaller sized unit, making it ideal for foreign cars.
These centrifugal superchargers are most like turbo charger kits, which usually
cost more.
Positive displacement superchargers are those commonly
seen in classic hot rods with the hood raised or cut out to accommodate their
larger size. These systems pump air into the intake manifold, but do so at a very
high, fixed rate which is proportionate to the size of the supercharger and the
engine speed. This means that over-boost cannot occur while boost is experienced
instantly. One disadvantage, in addition to size, is the fact that this type of
supercharger generates a great deal of heat. Fortunately, you can counteract
this effect by installing an intercoolor to chill the air intake. For larger
sports cars and racing applications, a positive displacement supercharger is
the way to go.
The advanced technology of today’s supercharger kits mean
that you may realize nearly double the horsepower from your car’s engine. Many
systems claim an increase of 45% in both horsepower and pound feet of torque,
while some simply state a 50 – 70 gain in horsepower can be achieved. No matter
what results are actual in your vehicle, you are sure to experience highly
improved performance.
Look online to find the best prices for supercharger kits
and make sure to do your homework beforehand. With the purchase of the ideal
supercharger type for your car, you can blow away the competition in speed and
performance.
